GROWN MID-CENTURY

HOW A HOUSE RESPONDS TO ITS FAMILY GROWING UP

So often, clients come to us loving their homes but wanting functional updates that won’t detract from the character and history that they have grown into. The kitchen in this mid-century home wanted to live large to keep up with family dinners.

By adding onto the back of the house and reincorporating a half bath space, the kitchen can now fully function for a family of 4...plus one cat, one dog. Flat panel walnut cabinet doors and handmade local tile tie the addition into the vintage modern aesthetic of the existing home.

ANOTHER GROWTH SPURT

Three bedrooms on the second level allowed enough for everyone, but one was undersized. What was great as a nursery wasn’t ideal for a growing teenager.

By adding another room to the main level with an adjacent ¾ bath, the house can now accommodate the family growing up. It can function as a sunroom now with a pull-out sofa for guests, a quiet study space, or eventually a teenager’s bedroom. Or, perhaps, the occasional boomerang college student. Maybe it’s too nice...?
